Syrian Christian Youth Choose to Stay

In spite of all the trials, persecutions and difficulties, many Syrian Christian young people remain in their country, because they know there is much work to do in their churches. Young people like Gloria, or Kefas (names have been changed for security reasons), from Aleppo, a city divided and semi destroyed by the fighting.

Kefas said, “Where I am people need us. If we go away, who will help them, who will share the Gospel with them?” “Before the war, I could never understand how the apostle Paul could rejoice in difficult situations. Now I do! I feel the joy of the Lord in the situation in which we are living.” Kefas also affirms that, in spite of the fear, he assumes the risk and the responsibility of being part of the Church. “Of course, I am scared, I’m human; but the Church doesn’t just exist for “anything”, it has an intention, we have a responsibility. In a way we are like the Early Church which was also persecuted”.

Gloria said she was very moved when hearing that people worldwide pray for Syria. “That encourages and helps us. We need it; it is good to know the world is concerned about us and intercedes for us. It is difficult living in a dangerous situation and there is much to do”.

Babel, along with her five sisters, little brother and parents, fled from northern Syria to safety in Lebanon six months ago when living conditions and the security situation in their home-town became unbearable. Amazingly, the whole family became Christians four years ago and the children have been very attached to SAT-7 KIDS programmes ever since! They began sending messages from Syria on Facebook to Marianne the presenter of the programme Yalla Nghanny Sawa (Let’s Sing Together), and when they arrived in Lebanon she invited them to appear on the show. While discussing the miracles of God in the Bible, the children were able to share God’s miracles of protection that they had experienced in Syria.”

In war torn Aleppo, Syria, a children’s outreach is greatly impacting youngsters through a programme called “Joy for Kids.” Organizers seek to introduce biblical truths in a creative, engaging way through dramatic presentations. The ministry leaders says, “Children want to come to church meetings and hear more about Jesus, even though they are Muslim kids. God is giving us great opportunities to share what we have…”

The parents sit quietly in the background, but they listen and often ask for prayer. In some cases, the spiritual impact is significant, even miraculous. The ministry leader said no more than 15 people would attend their church meetings many years ago. Now he marvels to see over 850 people come, most from a Muslim background.

“A Muslim lady said to us after one of the meetings: ‘Please don’t stop what you are doing after the war is over. We would love to have you over in our houses, if anything is still left.” Children ages 8 to 15 are coming three or four times a week.

The United Bible Society has reported a sharp increase in the number of Christian Scriptures distributed in countries where believers suffer the highest levels of persecution. Global Scripture distribution rose from 381 million in 2011 to more than 405 million in 2012, of which 32.1 million were Bibles.

The highest increase was in Syria; in the midst of its huge humanitarian crisis, over eight times more Scriptures were distributed through a network of church volunteers, in 2012 than 2011; 163,000 in total last year. “Christians in Syria are under enormous pressure and are in great need of encouragement,” said Mike Bassous, General Secretary of the Lebanon Bible Society. “Staff in Syria are working hard to produce enough Scriptures to meet these needs.”

There has been a similar substantial increases in Iraq, Egypt, India, Laos and Nigeria, all countries where Christians are suffering some of the highest levels of persecution. United Bible Societies Director General Michael Perreau says, “With rising persecution of Christians in certain parts of the world, and increasing secularisation in others, it is encouraging… to see that God’s Word is more sought after and cherished than ever before.” There has also been “a huge boost” in digital access to Scripture, which is particularly helpful in countries where it is dangerous to read printed Christian literature.
