On March 15 the Pacific island group of Vanuatu was hit by a devastating cyclone, leaving more than 100,000 people, nearly half of the population, homeless. Vanuatu’s motto is ‘In God We Stand’. Committed Christians play a major role in leading the country – not least the president himself, Baldwin Lonsdale, who is also an Anglican priest.
More than 90 percent of houses in Port Vila alone are damaged, nearly every school destroyed, there’s damage to health facilities and the water supplies. President Lonsdale feared that development in the island nation had been wiped out, adding: ‘It means that we will have to start anew again. Over the past weeks many international Christian relief organizations and churches from Australia and New Zealand have sent help to Vanuatu.
As nearly every village on Vanuatu has a church, Christians are in a unique position to provide help and distribute aid to those who need it most. This will give communities and individuals the capacity to recover and to get on their feet again. Christians on the islands reported they have joy despite the adverse circumstances.
