A recent report by âLatinobarĂłmetro,â Religion in the Times of Pope Francis, indicates that the economic growth experienced in Latin America in the last 18 years has not led to a secularisation of society as in North America or Europe. Latin America remains a âbelievingâ continent; what has occurred is a migration from Roman Catholicism to other religions, especially to evangelical Christianity. This is particularly so amongst young people who are embracing evangelical Christianity. In 1995, 80% of Latin Americans considered themselves to be âCatholicsâ. By 2013 this figure had dropped to 67% as the number of âEvangelicalsâ rose. Only Mexico and the Dominican Republic bucked the trend.
