In a recent interview for The Telegraph, former Archbishop, Rowan Williams commented on the shrinkage in numbers of young people with a knowledge of the Christian faith. He said: “The other side is that people then rediscover Christianity with a certain freshness, because it’s not ‘the boring old stuff that we learnt at school and have come to despise’. He says he sees ‘a curiosity about Christianity’ on school visits.
Dr Nick Shepherd, of the Institute for Children, Youth and Mission, agreed: “We do see an increased interest from young people in understanding Christianity, and the contact that our students and partners have with young people in schools and youth work supports this.”
Dr Shepherd highlighted how research conducted by Sally Nash from ICYM’s Midlands office found that young people expect Christian youth workers to be open about their faith and they enjoy interacting with their views. This Editor has found similar interest while talking to teenagers on the streets of Eastbourne. They have been told not to bother with Christianity any more, so their interest is aroused.
