Sponsored by Yariv Levin, who chairs Israel’s coalition government, a new law has passed in the Knesset by 31 votes to 6 distinguishing between the country’s Muslim and Christian Arabs. “Out of
ignorance, the government has been lumping all of the minorities, Druse, Christians and others, under the category of Arab, even though there are big differences between them… the result is that
only Muslim concerns were met,” Levin explained. Levin said that it was the Christian community who first reached out to him to consider the legal distinction. Although there are those who
complain this law could benefit Christian Arabs over Muslims, Levin says, “This is an important, historic step that could introduce balance to the State of Israel, and connect us [Jews] with the
Christians.”
