This webinar was recorded live on 6 April, 2020. Glen Scrivener is an experienced online host of hundreds of conversations — the kind that really matter. He’s joined by psychologist Dr Joanna Jackson and church leader, Rev. Dr Paul Blackham.
There are deep fault lines in our world and the trials of our day are revealing them. But this week at Speak Life we have been lifting up the One whose standards we’re all using, whether we know it or not!
It’s Jesus who has taught the world that rulers should be servants, that they should put themselves under the law, that they should not ‘lord it over’ others but instead sacrifice themselves. It’s Jesus who teaches us that we are all one, whatever our race or social standing. It’s Jesus who says ‘put away the sword, for those who live by the sword will die by the sword.’
Incredibly our world, built by Jesus’ message, still remembers the teaching even if they’ve forgotten the source. Here at Speak Life we long to remind them! And to remind the world that there isn’t just a righteous standard over us, but a loving Saviour who offers to be with us.
Perhaps you can share some of these resources with your friends and family and, during this divided time, point to the Prince of Peace.
In this episode we talk about what everyone is talking about: Dominic Cummings, Boris Johnson, that Durham trip, the media and the tidal wave of splenetic rage engulfing the UK! But into that context we discuss the 10 standards which everyone in the west acknowledges, whatever side they take on the culture wars. We’re actually united by certain expectations that we share and these expectations are thoroughly biblical and totally bonkers. They are bonkers, that is, apart from Jesus Christ. He is the one who can come good on all our expectations. He is the one who can heal our divided nations and divided hearts. He is our one hope moving forwards.
In these strange and difficult times there are also silver linings. One is the ease with which we can traverse boundaries. When our mission to Cambridge was cancelled last month, we got online instead and interviewed Rachel Gilson who was due to headline our main event.
When the launch of Abortion by Lizzie Ling and Vaughan Roberts was put online, we got to interview Vaughan in a fascinating video.
And during lockdown, Justin Brierley, host of the Unbelievable radio show and podcast, found time to speak with Glen about ‘good faith conversations.’ These were three incredibly insightful chats — check them out as videos or podcasts below!
Something else that lockdown allows is the painstaking work involved in computer animation! It might seem like Christmas is far away, but when you have to build up a film frame-by-frame you need a long lead time. And lockdown conditions are proving just right for our CGI spectacular. Here’s where we’re up to in 90 seconds:

Justin Brierley has hosted hundreds of good faith conversations on the Unbelievable show on Premier Christian Radio. Through the show, the podcast and now the Big Conversations video series he is reaching millions. Here Glen Scrivener talks to Justin about many things including his own appearance on the show earlier in the year when he debated Matt Dillahunty. They also talk about some other intriguing cases of sceptics coming closer to faith — like Tom Holland, Douglas Murray, and Dave Rubin. Something is going on. As the meaning crisis hits, the gospel is powerfully at work and we get Justin’s take on it all, as well as his best tips for holding good faith conversations.
Rachel Gilson began at Yale University identifying as Gay and an Atheist. Then she read a stolen book and her life was changed forever. Rachel has written the new book Born Again This Way, published by the Good Book Company. Here Glen Scrivener talks to her evangelism, sex, marriage, family and the radical kinds of churches we need.
Vaughan Roberts is the rector of St Ebbes, Oxford and the co-author (with Lizzie Ling) of the new book Abortion. Here Vaughan speaks of his context among a liberal city and among conservative churches — and how both contexts make it difficult to talk about abortion. But talk about it we must. Vaughan tells us why and how in this fascinating interview with Glen Scrivener.
This week we featured two interviews with two inspirational evangelists.
First was Dean Gavaris, the founder and executive director of Gateway Pregnancy Centres. His Christ-centred approach to crisis pregnancy counselling was paradigm-shifting. He puts evangelism at the heart of his ministry and has seen thousands of babies saved and thousands of professions of faith. Can you be 100% pro-life and 100% pro-evangelism? Let Dean show you the way!
Our second inspiring evangelist was the internationally best-selling author and speaker Becky Pippert. Having written one of the great books on personal evangelism, Out Of The Saltshaker, Becky has just released Stay Salt: The world has changed, our message must not. Here she talks about all that she’s learnt in half a century of compelling Christian witness. You will be informed and inspired by this 40 minutes. Listen, pray, and share the goodness of what you learn here:
This happened to be the 300th episode of the Speak Life podcast. Can you believe it! 300!
The Lord Has Been Good To Us!
Hitting the 300 mark for podcasts has been a wonderful reminder to us of all that God has enabled us to do. Through podcasts, radio, videos, TV, books, courses, tracts and online campaigns — through face to face proclamation in churches, schools, universities and the like — we have sought to make Christ known and equip the church for its missionary task. If you are able to support us in this vital outreach, we would be so grateful. One-off gifts are wonderful but monthly commitments help even more. Could you or your church prayerfully consider partnering with us at this time. We are not taking a backwards step during this crisis and we’d love to step forward with you! Please go to speaklife.org.uk/give.
Becky Pippert’s first book, Out Of The Salt Shaker, is a Christian classic about evangelism. 40 years later, she shares the fruits of 4 more decades of sharing her faith the world over. This interview with Glen Scrivener is gold dust for any would-be witness to Christ.
