Speak Life is an exciting charity with a proud history. We have been proclaiming the good news since 1952 using every means possible. Today we continue that legacy with a ministry that reaches millions each year in online and face-to-face evangelism. Could you help us reach even more?
Maybe you hopped on board when we launched our Christmas videos, Meet the Nativity. They were seen half a million times, and we gave away 1700 evangelistic books on the back of that campaign.
Maybe you first heard of us through The Gospel in 90 seconds. Again, that video reached half a million people as I talked through the Light, Life and Love of God.
Perhaps you first encountered us this Easter, when we launched 12 videos on the topic of Easter and Comedy. Taking our cue from Easter Sunday being April Fools Day, we explored Easter as the Divine Comedy.
Speaking of Divine Comedy, maybe you picked up our latest evangelistic book. It’ll only take you an hour to read but Andrew Wilson said it’ll take a decade to think through (which I thought was a bit over the top as a commendation, but it’s very nice he said it).
Or maybe we’ve met in person. Recently Speak Life has been on mission to Glasgow, St Andrews, All Souls, Langham Place, Canary Wharf, Brighton, Coleraine and Bangor. In all these places we’ve seen people trusting Jesus for the first time.
At the same time our regular output has blessed thousands each day. From Reading Between the Lines, a daily devotional, to Thorny Questions where Paul Feesey and I tackle big objections to the Christian faith each week. We also record the LIVEcast each Tuesday lunchtime to a live online audience and release it each Friday as a podcast.
That sounds like a lot doesn’t it? It is. And wouldn’t it be a shame to miss all these resources which we offer to you free? As we seek to get in line with GDPR, can you please opt in so that we can keep you informed of our world-reaching resources. Just click on the link below and we’ll sign you up properly. If you haven’t clicked since May, we can’t guarantee that you’ll stay on our lists. So take 30 seconds now, and if you’re in the UK and you add your postal address, we will send you for free a copy of Divine Comedy, to read and give away to friends.
And while we have you, could you consider supporting us at Speak Life? As you can see, we’re pretty active. This is a good investment if you want gospel seed to be sown on many soils. We’re raising funds for an apprentice evangelist – someone who will come alongside Paul and I, learn theologically and practically how to share the gospel and who can serve the ministry in all that we do, in proclamation and media.
Details of how you can support are below.
Moving forwards, look out for my new evangelistic book: Long Story Short. This fun, fast-paced Bible overview is written to introduce the Scriptures to those with no prior experience of Christian faith. We would love to see this resource get into the hands of many and to transform lives. It comes out with Christian Focus Publishing at the end of June.
Finally, will you pray for our team, working hard to make all this happen. As we move towards summer, things will be a little less busy so please pray for recharging and refreshing over the summer and for God to water the seed that’s been scattered that new life might spring up all over the world.
So then… please sign up – or re-sign up – to our mailing list, get your free Divine Comedy, consider donating to our apprentice fund, and share this video with your friends. We’d love to spread the word about these free resources. And until next time, keep speaking life.
This summer has involved much fewer speaking engagements, instead it’s been about holidays, writing and preparation for a massive autumn ahead.
I’m working on three books at the moment. One is a fun, fast-paced, Christ-centred Bible-Overview called either Bible Express or Long Story Short. What do you think? Let me know! That will, in time, come out with Christian Focus.
Then there’s Reading Between the Lines the book. That will come out as a devotional with 10ofthose in time for Christmas and your new year’s reading plans.
And then I’m writing an Easter book for 10ofthose called Tragedy? And that will be a quick, evangelistic giveaway book. Please be praying for these resources as they will reach thousands.
This summer we’ve also been preparing for Christmas. For the last 6 Christmases we’ve produced mini-films that have won awards as well as receiving over a million views online. This year our Christmas video is our biggest and best yet. We have the help of professional writers, actors and filmographers. We want it to be considered right up there alongside John Lewis, Sainsburys, Tescos, etc. We want millions to watch and we want the national conversation about Christmas videos to get beyond Which supermarket had the best advert? We’re going to tell the Christmas story in a way we hope will really connects online. We have 500 copies of Four Kinds of Christmas to give away off the back of this outreach and we really want to not only make a splash but to make disciples.
Looking ahead, we’re very excited to be welcoming Paul Feesey on board at Speak Life. He has been studying with us, doing the Union Graduate Diploma for the last two years and now he’s working alongside us as an associate evangelist. He’ll be preaching, training folks in evangelism and also helping us with our online outreach. Starting this autumn, Speak Life is going to really up its game in terms of reaching YouTube and Facebook. Billions visit these sites every month and we want to reach these mission fields that are white for harvest, so please do pray for our online witness. And if you see our images, posts, videos, podcasts and blog-posts online, remember Sharing is Caring!

Hello! Welcome to the Speak Life Update.
It’s been nearly two months since our last update – very sorry about that. Since our last one I’ve travelled three times to Southampton, twice to Bangor in Northern Ireland, I’ve also spoken in Belfast, Bournemouth, Bridgend, Berkshire and Brighton (all the Bs) – as well as Maidenhead, York, Sheffield, Wimborne and closer to home. That adds up to well over 70 talks given in pubs, restaurants, cafes, student unions, libraries, classrooms, assembly halls, theatres, as well as churches and in the open air. And when you scatter that much seed you are going to find lots of good soil and lots of hard soil. I’ve found both, but praise God there have been signs of new life springing up in a student union in Sheffield, in a New Frontiers Church in Southampton, in a Presbyterian Church in Northern Ireland, in a theatre in Maidenhead. People, whether dramatically or quietly, have been saying “I want in on Jesus.” Praise God!
It’s really made me think that Jesus’ strategy is far more a scattergy than a strategy. Jesus calls us to sow seed on all the soils and really he doesn’t give us a Plan B. He doesn’t tell us how to cultivate the ground, He doesn’t tell us how to remove stones, He explicitly tells us not to do any weeding (see Matthew 13). We sow, we sow and we sow some more. And if that doesn’t seem to be working, Jesus doesn’t tell us to change our message or change our methods, He tells us to change our location. For now move on. Shake the dust off your feet, don’t cast pearls before swine. If these people aren’t listening right now, there are plenty of others who will. So move on.
Now that doesn’t mean you move on from the long-term relationships that you have with certain people – we never move on from loving people. But, as Rico Tice says, “When your loved ones go quiet, you go quiet.” For now. Sow your seed elsewhere and come back.
It strikes me that so much of our evangelism involves ramming home the gospel to those who have already declared their closed-ness to it. Often that’s for laudable motives – we just want to see them saved – but I wonder whether other factors are at play more broadly. I wonder how much is actually about justifying ourselves before our unbelieving audience – trying desperately to convince them that we really are clever to believe in Jesus. But think of Paul among the Athenian philosophers. Having sowed the seed, some believed, some sneered, Paul left. He didn’t hang around and try desperately to appear cultured and rational in their eyes. Some believed his gospel, and that’s wonderful. But if others wouldn’t, Paul moved on to those who would believe it.
Once again, I’m not arguing that any of us “move on” from loving people. We are not to “move on” from our long-term relationships with non-Christian friends and family. But I am saying that our evangelistic strategies, more broadly, need to remember the focus on scattering. Let’s get out there and scatter. As Jesus’ parable in Matthew 13 would tell us – when people are hard, sow the seed. When some are shallow and fickle – sow the seed. When some are idolatrous and unfruitful – sow the seed. There is good soil out there and it WILL produce a crop, 30, 60, even 100-times what is sown. We have good seed, there is good soil, let’s get scattering.
Each month we try to spotlight a different aspect of our ministry. Do you get Reading Between the Lines? It’s a daily devotional that takes you through the Bible, in 365 short videos. You can subscribe to our Facebook page to get them in your feed, or subscribe to our YouTube channel or to our podcast where all the episodes are available for free. Do you struggle to get into the Bible daily? Here’s a little encouragement to see Christ in all of Scripture – subscribe now.
Having been travelling for so long, I’m really looking forward to more time in Eastbourne. Apart from one mission in June I’ll be mainly at home until September focussing on several writing projects. There are a couple of evangelistic books I’m writing. There’s Reading Between the Lines as a print edition. I’m helping to write a couple of courses and plotting and planning a big Christmas outreach too. Would you please pray for these resources which can reach hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people. Pray this seed will get scattered!
