When I do wrong it’s out of character. When you do it, it’s typical! When I do wrong, it’s a mistake. When you do it, it’s you through and through. When I mess up, there are extenuating circumstances. When you do it, there’s no excuse.
This kind of hypocrisy comes naturally to us. Jesus says we are like eye-doctors tut-tutting about the speck in our patient’s eye – all the while we have a plank of 4-by-2 in our own. Let us laugh at our own hypocrisy, let us pray for a sense of proportion and let us see the sins of others as a cause of contrition not conceit. Today, I have the plank, you have the speck. But we both have Jesus and there’s enough grace in Him to heal us all.
PRAY for a sense of proportion and for the grace to deal with our own sins before those of others.
