Francis Schaeffer used to teach this illustration: Imagine there was an invisible tape recorder hanging around your neck. These days we might update the illustration and call it a smart phone app. Imagine that it records every moral judgement you ever make about another. Each time you hold another person to account, each time you tell someone they “mustn’t”, each time you bemoan a colleague or institution it records your judgement. Imagine the litany of judgements – scores every month, hundreds every year, thousands in a whole life-time. Imagine that on the last day Jesus retrieves these recordings and hits play. Imagine if every standard you’ve held the world to was applied to you. Who could stand?!
No-one. So do not judge. Jesus Christ has paid for your sins. He has removed you from the place of judgement. You don’t need to shift around the blame – it’s all been taken by Christ. In the
words of Luke 6:36 – “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”
PRAY against self-justification in your own heart.
PRAY that the sins of others would call forth your pity and help rather than your superiority and censure.
