Literally this prayer is: “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors”. Jesus portrays wrongs as debts and forgiveness is the cancellation of that debt. When we could not pay God – when we were up to our eye-balls in debt – God cancelled our debt. Now we are to cancel the debts of others (see Matthew 18:21-35). This will feel costly. People may “cost” me thousands of pounds worth of emotional debt. That may feel overwhelming if I forget how much I have been forgiven. Through the cross, Christ has cancelled trillions of pounds worth of my own debt. Therefore, can’t I forgive the comparatively tiny debts others owe me? Of course I can. I must! Every day therefore I pray to God “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.”
PRAY to confess your own sins.
PRAY for the grace to forgive others.
