More than 2,500 asylum seekers have been baptised in evangelical churches in Germany in the past two years. Another 1000 have joined the German Protestant church. “Baptism only for opportunistic reasons (to help asylum applications) can be ruled out in almost all cases,” said a spokesman for the Protestant Church in Wurtemburg.
“There is an interest in the Christian faith that is increasing among people who come from Islamic countries,” another pastor said. Many of the newly baptised Christians came to Germany from Iran and Afghanistan.
