It’s a comical image – placing an upturned bucket over your lamp and then complaining about the darkness – but that’s what Christians are always doing. We are the light of the world (Matthew
5:14), and yet we complain about the surrounding darkness and our lack of impact. What’s the answer? To “burn a bit brighter”? Essentially Jesus says: “The issue is not something to add, it’s
something to take away.” We are light, we are witnesses, we are ambassadors for Christ but we’re always surrounding ourselves with other things that obscure the light. We prefer to be “cool” or “knowledgeable” or “funny” instead of simply offering Christ, His love, His truth. Jesus basically tells me, “Remove the bowls, let it shine!”
PRAY to identify and repent of our “bowls” – our false identities – and instead to gladly own and radiate Christ.
