Righteousness means three things in the Bible: the goodness of God; the blessed life in action; and the world set to rights. It’s incredibly attractive, but elusive too. We “hunger and thirst for righteousness”. That means we don’t naturally have it. But Jesus promises here that we will be filled – like bread for the hungry, righteousness will be given to us. This is because Jesus Himself is given to us. He is, in the words of Jeremiah 23, “the LORD our righteousness.” He is Himself the goodness and God; He is the blessed life in action; in Him the world is set to rights. Jesus is righteousness and He’s given to us like bread to the hungry. So rejoice! Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for, in Christ, we are filled!
PRAY for a greater vision of Christ, our righteousness.
