It’s a dog eat dog world out there and Jesus says there will be one power that comes out on top. At the end of all history, one group will emerge with absolute dominion: the meek. You could
translate it as “gentle” or “friendly” or “humble”. After millennia of cut and thrust, the winner-takes-all-victors will be the lowly.
Do you believe that? Well think of Christ, the Suffering Servant. As He died on the cross under the power of a brutal empire, nothing could have looked weaker. As He lay in the grave on
Easter Saturday, nothing looked more foolish than this verse. And yet on Easter Sunday it wasn’t just Jesus who was vindicated. His whole project of world-domination was established.
Today, everything in your heart and everything in your culture will tell you “Assert yourself, raise yourself up, take what you can get.” Jesus calls us to share in His cross-shaped meekness because the future really does belong to Christ.
