In this edition of the Speak Life Daily the following devotionals will take us through the Sermon on the Mount – the most famous teaching of Jesus and an ethical vision that has shaped civilisations. It begins, though, in a surprising way. Jesus makes us realise that the life of the kingdom is not for spiritual go-getters.
It’s for the poor in spirit – the “spiritually rubbish.” At every point in this sermon we are meant to confess our spiritual poverty and to entrust ourselves wholly to the King. We are not “up to” the kingdom of heaven. No, the kingdom of heaven comes down to us, because the King has stooped. We must not try to raise ourselves from the gutter or else we’ll find we’ve missed the meeting point.
Jesus meets us where we are, and where we are is “poor in spirit”.
PRAY to Jesus confessing your spiritual poverty.
PRAISEJesus that He has come for the weak and needy
