When would you expect David to pray the line “Then I will teach transgressors”? When he’d felled Goliath? When he’d ascended the throne? When he brought peace to the kingdom? Actually he teaches transgressors after the incident with Bathsheba. It’s when he was inescapably, undeniably and oh-so-publicly a sinner that he then preaches to sinners. And that’s when they turn to God.
As we’ve been tracing the theme of darkness-then-light in the Bible we see how David’s own witness was not about remaining dazzlingly bright. Actually through the gloom of his own sin he is able to come through and preach hope to fellow sinners. Sometimes we feel like we can only witness if we have a spotless reputation. David reminds us that there’s never a bad time to “teach transgressors”.
PRAY for a positive witness to those around you. But also PRAY that God could transform even your failures to evangelistic opportunities.
