If we’re out having a drink together then you might push an empty cup or glass my way. If so, the signal would be clear: you want me to pay for your glass to be filled. If however you push towards me a full glass the message is different: you have paid and now this is your gift to me. In Matthew 5 Jesus hands to us the law, but not as a demand, as a gift. He has paid to fill it full (that’s what “fulfill” means). Now we can take it into ourselves and be nourished by it. From the hand of Jesus, we receive the law as an embodiment of “the good life.” We cannot fulfill it ourselves, but in Him it is given to us as a gift to be lived out for the good of the world.
PRAY to know and live out the goodness of the law that is written on our hearts by the Spirit.
