Gerardo Amarilla, has become the President of the Chamber of Deputies (Lower House) of Uruguay, the first evangelical legislator to hold the position. Amarilla has said that the environment, family and poverty are his three priorities. A 2014 study shows that Uruguay is the most secular country in Latin America, with 38% of atheists or agnostics, compared with 41% Catholics, and only 8% of evangelicals.
“To begin with Parliament looked at me askance, but I did not feel their attitude as discrimination” says Amarilla. The new president of the Chamber of Deputies of Uruguay recognizes that there is “a kind of taboo against the fact that you hold deep religious convictions”. “Honestly I must say that what one thinks, if you have a religious conviction it gives you a different view of the world… a different view of your neighbour,” he says. Amarilla is now not the only evangelical in Parliament, as there is a kind of evangelical “bench” in the different parties. However, no evangelical had succeeded in reaching the post of President over the Chamber of Deputies.
His first became an evangelical at the age of 9. Thereafter he grew up in that environment, in the city of Montevideo, and has entered into politics while living in the city of Rivera.
