When we hear the word “paradise” we are tempted to think in terms of fantasy but the Bible takes paradise very seriously. It’s the Greek word for “garden” so we are meant to think of Eden – a place of delight and intimacy with God. Can we really believe in paradise in the midst of a suffering world? Yes! Jesus, surrounded by death and suffering, promised the dying thief: “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). Paradise is not for the ancient myths. Because of the cross, it’s for dying sinners in a dying world. Paradise is for you.
