Myanmar (formerly Burma) is a nation of 56 million people, 89% of whom are Buddhist, 4% Muslim, and around 5% from various Christian denominations. In recent years, Myanmar has begun the transition from a military dictatorship to a new emerging democracy. However, a study by the Pew Research Center in 2014 found that there is a high degree of government restrictions on religion in Myanmar.
This did not stop more than 13,000 young people gathering outdoors in the Insein Football Stadium in the capital of Yangon on 24 and 25 July despite the torrential rain falling at the time – a historic youth event organized by the Myanmar Evangelical Christian Association and Teen Mania. It is the first time that Teen Mania based in the United States has had an international outreach and a national event for youth in Myanmar.
Teen Mania reports that 3,000 young people gave their lives to Christ during the two nights of meetings. President of Teen Mania, Ron Luce, said: “The sound of about 13,000 people worshiping in both Burmese and English, dancers of every tribe in Myanmar move in praise at the beginning of each night … all that felt like being in heaven,” he said.
