In a series on Power Evangelism, Andy and Glen discuss the ‘power of illustrations’:
- Why do people discuss the illustrations in a sermon more than the theology?
- How should we use them in evangelism, and what is the Biblical use of them?
- Can we overuse illustrations?
Glen also takes us though some illustrations to help respond to people such as:
- How do we know Christianity is true?
- Is the Bible trustworthy?
- What about Suffering?
- I wish I had your faith
- Doesn’t free grace lead to sin?
- How can someone else pay for my sin?
- Why isn’t being good, good enough for God?
- Are Christians homophobes?
- Are Christians anti-Science?
Glen mentions a book by Paul Little called ‘How to Give Away Your Faith‘.
And, of course, get Glen’s book 321, the story of God, the World, and You.

Great episode! Thanks for everyone’s hard work and helping equip the church.
Thanks Sebastian!
Thanks for this guys, I love a good illustration. I would list a few of my favourites but I have a feeling I may have stolen them from you. I don’t think having them in there is a bad thing, as long as it directs back to the nature of God or Jesus. That way when they do repeat the illustration but they are thinking of that at the same time. I am a helper on an Alpha course at the moment and some of the illustrations used in the talks recently are amazing!
What do you feel about illustrations for the Trinity? Sometimes they are very unhelpful, like water, like an egg, etc..
I will have to get back to you with some of my faves when I have more time to comment. I’m thinking why wait outside and have a cheeseburger…, the judge serving the punishment then paying the fine, someone in credit paying our debt, picking holes in someone’s house, showing them yours and how you can patch holes in theirs (one of yours I think).. I love the faith in Ed one also, I have heard you use that as an IT guy also. Thank you for these new illustrations, very good.
Hey Chris,
I think illustrations of the Trinity are fine if they’re from the Bible. So – Genesis 1:26 – humanity as male and female is an illustration of “Persons united in love.” Or – Hebrews 1:3 – The Light Source and the Light Beam relate to each other like Father and Son. So biblical illustrations are cool but illustrations like “water, steam and ice” or “I am a son, husband and father” are almost always heresies!
God bless
