In 1992 Jim Mellon was part of the leadership team of a thousand plus member church with a million dollar a year budget. While reading the Scriptures his conscience was pricked when he realised that his church spent 90% of its budget on buildings upkeep, staff salaries, and church programmes; less than 10% went into missions and the needy.
Jim and his wife resigned their leadership positions and founded the Association of Home Churches in central Texas, USA. Mellon says. “Instead of ‘going to church’, we started to ‘be the church’ that meets in a home.” The number of house churches in the network grew rapidly and, over the last 13 years, Mellon and his network have been able to deploy approximately 1 million dollars to help plant over 450 churches in India, and influence their community through benevolence giving.
Their emergency fund helps people in the network who become unemployed or have another emergency; it helps families go to conferences and short-term missions. Around December 1st, any excess money is distributed to poor church families.
