Can the power of the Gospel transform public education? Sajan George, founder of Matchbook Learning, believes so. “Christians stood at the basis of the school system we know today,” he says. “It was born out of the conviction that every child has value and the God-given right to develop itself.”
But George believes the current school system needs serious reform. To prove his point, he decided to start with the ‘hardest ground‘: the weakest (bottom 5%) public schools in the USA. In his concept the student receives personally customized education, and the teachers coach the students in pursuing their dreams for the future. This new kind of school was prototyped in Detroit with excellent results. Over a 2-year period the percentage of students proficient in reading doubled from 22% to 46%, and those in math quintupled from 2.9% to 15%. Beating all the odds, A.L. Holmes, the prototype school, moved from the bottom 5% to the top 5% in Michigan.
